Description:
It was a quiet night for me, there had been minimal calls and minimal action needed from me. I decided I would stop into the Burger Shot for a burger since I had so much free time, I got my order and came back outside to my ambulance. I stood there for a few moments, enjoying my feast, suddenly I heard my radio making sounds. I began to listen intensely at what was being said, dispatch said "Protocol 30, Response Amber" I had to process what that was for a second, I then realized that was traumatic injury and it was life-threatening. I asked dispatch for more information, all they could tell me was a man had multiple logs of wood fall onto his leg and/or foot and he was heading in and out of consciousness.
alt text
I threw my burger to the ground and quickly got into my ambulance. I got the location from the dispatcher, and I headed off in that direction with the sirens and lights blaring. As I was in San Fierro, it took about 10 minutes to reach the location of the man. As I was approaching I was preparing myself for what I may see, "its just wood, surely can't do that much damage" I thought to myself. I approached the call site and instantly spotted the patient, I also spotted the injury. "Oh fuck!" I said as I tried to compose myself, this looked bad. I rushed over to the man, he was barely conscious when I got to him. "What happened?" I patiently awaited his reply. "A...Log....Fell....On...Me" He said with a look of despair in his eyes. I examined his leg and replied "Yea, I can see that sir. I'm sorry to tell you this but there is at least a dozen logs on your leg"
alt text
The man still going in and out of consciousness, mumbled back to me "Oh fuck... I thought it was one" I reassured him he was going to be okay, I looked at him seeing the fear in his eyes. While I examined him I tried to get some more information about him to calm his nerves and to distract him from the severe pain. I said in the utmost calmest voice I could, "So what is your name?" Looking confused, he replied "Willy" I smiled at him and once again reassured him it would be okay. "Willy is the name of a famous singer you know?" Still attempting to distract him from the pain. As I continued making conversation and attempting to keep him both distracted and conscious, I began to realize there was no hope for this foot. It was just too badly injured and the only way to remove him in time to save his life would be an amputation.
alt text
I looked Willy in the eyes and I broke the news to him. "Look Willy, I'm sorry but I can't save your foot, if you want to live I will have to amputate it" His eyes opened widely and he gave me a glare, I kept my composure as I didn't want to mention the amount of blood he was losing. He hadn't replied yet so I once again spoke "You can refuse medical attention if you wish, if you don't want me to amputate. Honestly though, its your only option for survival" He nodded finally and replied "Do it, I have no choice. Help me please" I told him to wait here and I will be right back. I rushed over to the back of the ambulance and opened the doors, I was looking for the saw and the hose (to cut off blood flow). I found both quickly and also grabbed some morphine to help with the pain.
alt text
As I rushed back over to Willy, I talked him through the procedure I was about to do and once again asked for his approval. "Yes" he replied. I injected him with morphine and allowed a minute or two for it to kick in, "This should help with the pain" I said to Willy with a calm voice. I knew the morphine wouldn't kick in for a few minutes, but I had to amputate now! I grabbed the hose and wrapped it around the upper leg, I then grabbed the saw. I began sawing and Willy screamed in agony, "I'm sorry" I said. He slowly went from screaming, to a lite wine, to silence. "The morphine kicked in, thank fuck" I thought to myself. I continued to saw through the ankle area and pulled him free.
alt text
At this moment one of his colleagues ran over and I immediately said in a firm voice "Stand back please" He gave me a glare and rolled his eyes, before walking back. I helped Willy up and put him into the ambulance, I once again told him "You are going to be okay" I explained to Willy that we will be going to San Fierro Hospital, it may take awhile but you will be fine. I went to my radio and contacted dispatch "Patient inbound - San Fierro Hospital" Dispatch quickly relayed the message to the hospital and I was off. It took approximately 14 minutes to get there, Willy was quite far out into the woods, any further and he may have died. We arrived to the hospital and I helped him out of the ambulance handing him over to the relevant doctors and nurses. After I handed him over, I went back to my ambulance. I pulled out my pack of cigarettes and lit one, sure a paramedic shouldn't smoke but I was depressed I nearly lost a patient today. This was the most horrific injury I had seen in years, I guess people are becoming less safety conscious these days.
alt text
As I finished my cigarette, I thought about Willy and wished him well. He was later released a week later and made a full recovery.

Description:
It was a dark and cold night, I was just beginning my overnight patrol. I was hoping for a quiet night as I had been extremely busy the last few nights, but I had a slight feeling this would not be a quiet night. I was sitting in my ambulance messing about on my phone, near the Four Dragons Casino in Las Venturas. I heard a static noise and then I knew, "Oh god, a call" I thought to myself. "Medic needed, protocol 29, response Amber" (Traffic Incident) Dispatch relayed over the radio. I quickly picked up the radio and confirmed I would response, it was not far only about 4 minutes up the road.
alt text
I quickly flicked on my lights and headed off in the direction of the call out. A few moments later I arrived to find two cars that had appeared to collide with each other, I stopped my ambulance and got out. I approached the first man, he was still sitting in his car I assumed he was still in shock from the crash. "You aight buddy?" I said to the man in a concerned voice. "I can't feel my legs he replied" I had a look under his dashboard, his legs appeared to be free. He must be numb from the adrenaline after the crash, I got him out of the vehicle and placed him next to his car. I then gave him a quick look over, he was going to be fine apart from a slight concussion.
alt text
As I looked over I spotted a 2nd man further down the road, he appeared to be in bad shape and was screaming for me to help him. I dismissed my 1st patient and told him to wait in the ambulance and I will be back. He got up and walked towards the ambulance, he then took a seat and waited for me to return. I ran over to the 2nd man, he was face down in the road at first. "Are you okay?" I said to him. "Uhhhh Help me" He said in agony. As I started to examine him he appeared to have minor injuries also, but his leg was broken. I picked him up and carried him to the ambulance, the stretcher wasn't available (budget cut - backs).
alt text
As I carried him to the ambulance and propped him up inside, I realized. I had not asked these men their names, I asked them then and there. They both replied, the 1st man was named Walter Christ and the 2nd was named Mr.Hoodie. I treated the broken leg with some morphine and a temporary cast until we could make it to the hospital. As we were on a major highway the closest hospital was less than 5 minutes away, I got in and informed Crippen Memorial Hospital. "Two Patients inbound, stable condition" I relayed over the radio to dispatch. We took off and a few moments later arrived at the hospital, both men were tired from the accident.
alt text
I opened the door and both men immediately fell out and to the ground. I once again checked them over to make sure I hadn't missed some kind of injury, I concluded it was due to exhaustion. I offered to carry them inside, I picked up Walter first and escorted him inside to the awaiting doctors and nurses. I then picked up Hoodie and did the same. Both made a full recovery and were released later that day.
